History

Introduction

At Cam Everlands Primary School, we believe that the study of history is fundamental to developing our pupils' understanding of the world around them and their place within it. Through the exploration of Britain's rich history, as well as the history of the wider world, we aim to inspire curiosity and a desire to learn more about the past. Our history curriculum is designed to equip pupils with a strong grasp of chronology, an appreciation for how everyday life has evolved, and an understanding of the rise and fall of civilisations and changing power structures.

Key Aims

Our history curriculum has been carefully crafted to align with our school's vision of "we believe, achieve and celebrate." We strive to:

  • Foster a love of history and a thirst for historical knowledge
  • Develop pupils' critical thinking skills through the use of primary, secondary, and tertiary sources
  • Enhance pupils' understanding of continuity and change, cause and effect, and the significance of historical events
  • Empower pupils to make connections between the past and the present, and to recognise the relevance of history in their daily lives
Content and Skills

Across Key Stages 1 and 2, our history curriculum provides a balanced and progressive learning experience. Pupils will develop a secure knowledge of British history, including the Anglo-Saxons, the Vikings, the Tudors, and the Victorian era. They will also explore the history of ancient civilisations, such as the Shang Dynasty, the Greeks, and the Romans, as well as significant events and figures from around the world.

In addition to acquiring historical knowledge, pupils will hone their skills in historical enquiry, interpretation, and communication. They will learn to analyse a range of sources, identify patterns and trends, and articulate their findings effectively through written, oral, and creative means.

Progression

Our history curriculum is designed to build upon prior learning, ensuring that pupils develop a deep and coherent understanding of the past. In Key Stage 1, the focus will be on developing a strong chronological awareness and an appreciation for how life has changed over time. As pupils progress through Key Stage 2, the curriculum will become increasingly challenging, with a greater emphasis on critical analysis, the evaluation of sources, and the exploration of more complex historical concepts.

Wider Impact

The study of history at Cam Everlands Primary School not only equips our pupils with a robust knowledge of the past but also prepares them for their future success. By cultivating critical thinking, research, and communication skills, we are empowering our pupils to become active and engaged citizens, capable of navigating the complexities of the modern world. Moreover, the exploration of diverse cultures and perspectives in our history curriculum supports the development of empathy, respect, and a global mindset, aligning with our school's core values of trust, honesty, and empathy.
