Geography
Introduction
At Cam Everlands Primary School, our geography curriculum is designed to foster a deep curiosity and fascination about the world and its people. Aligned with our school's vision of "we believe, achieve and celebrate", we aim to equip our pupils with the knowledge, understanding and skills to make sense of their local environment and the wider global context.
Key Aims
Our geography curriculum has three key aims:
- To develop pupils' contextual understanding of both local and globally significant places, and their natural and human characteristics.
- To enable pupils to comprehend how physical and human processes have shaped key global features and landscapes.
- To empower pupils to acquire and apply essential geographical skills, including data gathering, analysis and interpretation from a range of sources.
Content and Skills
Our geography curriculum provides pupils with a rich and diverse knowledge base. They will learn about the physical and human features of different environments, from the local area of Cam to contrasting regions around the world. Pupils will develop an understanding of geographical processes such as climate, ecosystems, urbanisation and migration.
Alongside this substantive knowledge, our curriculum prioritises the development of key geographical skills. Pupils will learn to read maps, use atlases, interpret data and communicate their geographical understanding through a variety of media. These skills will enable them to engage with geographical enquiry and apply their knowledge to new contexts.
Progression
Our geography curriculum is carefully sequenced to ensure progression in both knowledge and skills. In Key Stage 1, pupils develop a foundational understanding of their local area and simple map skills. As they progress through Key Stage 2, the curriculum broadens to include more complex physical and human geography, as well as opportunities to make comparisons between different locations.
Across the primary phase, pupils revisit core geographical concepts, building on their prior learning and deepening their understanding. This spiral approach equips them with the necessary knowledge and abilities to excel in geography and apply their skills in other subjects.
Wider Impact
The geography curriculum at Cam Everlands Primary School is designed to support our wider school vision and priorities. By fostering a deep appreciation for the diversity of the world, our pupils will develop empathy, respect and understanding - key values that underpin our school ethos.
Furthermore, the geographical knowledge and skills acquired through our curriculum will prepare pupils for the next stage of their education and beyond. They will be equipped with the critical thinking, problem-solving and communication skills that are essential for success in an increasingly interconnected world.
