Science
Introduction
At Cam Everlands Primary School, we believe that a high-quality science education is essential for our pupils to make sense of the world around them. Through our science curriculum, we aim to nurture our pupils' natural curiosity, equipping them with the knowledge, skills and understanding to become confident and inquisitive young scientists. Aligned with our school vision of "believe, achieve and celebrate", our science curriculum will empower our pupils to explore, investigate and discover the wonders of science, celebrating their achievements and successes along the way.
Key Aims
Our science curriculum has been carefully designed to:
- Foster a sense of wonder, curiosity and excitement about the natural world
- Develop essential scientific knowledge, concepts and methods across biology, chemistry and physics
- Enable pupils to use their scientific understanding to explain, predict and test hypotheses
- Equip pupils with the skills to work scientifically, including observing, questioning, experimenting and evaluating
- Prepare pupils for the next stage of their education and future careers in science-related fields
Content and Skills
Underpinned by the National Curriculum, our science curriculum will provide pupils with a broad and balanced understanding of key scientific ideas and their real-world applications. Pupils will develop a secure knowledge of core scientific concepts, such as living things and their habitats, materials and their properties, and forces and energy.
Alongside this strong foundation of scientific knowledge, pupils will have regular opportunities to apply their understanding by working scientifically. They will learn to plan and carry out investigations, make observations and measurements, and interpret and evaluate their findings. Our curriculum will also support the development of key skills, such as critical thinking, problem-solving and effective communication.
Progression
As pupils progress through Key Stages 1 and 2, our science curriculum will build upon their prior learning, ensuring that knowledge and skills are developed in a coherent and sequenced manner. Younger pupils will focus on exploring and observing the natural world, while older pupils will delve deeper into more complex scientific concepts and theories. Throughout their journey, pupils will be challenged to apply their scientific understanding in increasingly sophisticated ways, preparing them for the demands of secondary education.
Wider Impact
The science curriculum at Cam Everlands Primary School will not only develop our pupils' scientific knowledge and skills but also contribute to their overall personal and social development. By fostering a love of science, we aim to inspire our pupils to become active, responsible citizens who are equipped to tackle the scientific challenges of the future. Furthermore, ensuring that all pupils, regardless of their background or starting point, can achieve success in science.
