Writing Curriculum

Introduction

At Cam Everlands Primary School, we believe that developing strong literacy skills, particularly in writing, is fundamental to our pupils' academic success and personal growth. As a school, we are committed to fostering a love of language and equipping our pupils with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to become effective communicators, both in the classroom and beyond.

Key Aims

Our writing curriculum aims to:

  1. Ensure all pupils make excellent progress in their writing, regardless of their starting points or background.
  2. Develop pupils' ability to write for a range of purposes and audiences, using appropriate language, structure, and conventions.
  3. Instil in our pupils a sense of pride and accomplishment in their written work, celebrating their achievements and progress.
  4. Promote the importance of writing as a tool for self-expression, creativity, and critical thinking.
  5. Provide targeted support and intervention for pupils who require additional assistance in developing their writing skills.
Content and Skills

Our writing curriculum is designed to systematically build pupils' knowledge and skills in the following key areas:

  • Transcription (spelling, handwriting, and presentation)
  • Composition (planning, drafting, and editing)
  • Vocabulary, grammar, and punctuation

Pupils will be exposed to a diverse range of high-quality texts, which will inspire and inform their own writing. They will learn to write for different purposes, such as to inform, persuade, and entertain, and will develop their ability to use language effectively to achieve their intended purpose.

Progression

Throughout Key Stage 1 and 2, our writing curriculum will build upon the foundational skills developed in the early years. Pupils will be challenged to apply their knowledge and skills in increasingly complex and sophisticated ways, with a focus on developing their independence and self-reflection as writers.
