Reading
Introduction
At Cam Everlands Primary School, we believe that the ability to read fluently and comprehend what has been read is fundamental to a child's future success. As such, the teaching of English, and particularly reading, is at the heart of our school's vision to ensure that all pupils "believe, achieve and celebrate" their learning.
Key Aims
Our English curriculum is designed to equip all pupils with the essential skills and knowledge they need to become confident, articulate communicators, able to express themselves clearly both orally and in writing. We aim to foster a love of reading in our pupils, exposing them to a wide range of high-quality texts that will broaden their horizons, develop their vocabulary, and deepen their understanding of the world around them.
Content and Skills
Through a systematic, synthetic phonics programme in Key Stage 1, we ensure that all pupils gain a secure foundation in decoding and word recognition. As pupils progress through the school, we build upon this core knowledge, developing their fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension skills. Explicit teaching of reading strategies, such as inference and deduction, enables pupils to engage deeply with a range of fiction, non-fiction, and poetry.
Progression
Our reading curriculum is carefully sequenced to support pupils' progression, with key concepts and skills revisited and built upon year-on-year. As pupils move through the school, they are challenged to apply their knowledge and skills in increasingly complex and demanding contexts, preparing them for the next stage of their education.
Wider Impact
By delivering a high-quality reading curriculum, we aim to empower our pupils to become confident, articulate, and independent learners, able to access the full breadth of the curriculum and thrive in the wider world. Our focus on reading for pleasure and developing a love of literature will enrich pupils' lives, opening up new worlds and experiences.
