Music
Introduction
At Cam Everlands Primary School, we believe that music is a fundamental part of a well-rounded education. Our music curriculum is designed to engage and inspire our pupils, helping them to develop a lifelong love of music. We aim to nurture our pupils' musical skills and talents, empowering them to become increasingly competent musicians who can perform with confidence.
Key Aims
Our music curriculum has three key aims:
- To develop pupils' musical knowledge and skills, including their understanding of key musical concepts such as pitch, tempo, and timbre, as well as their ability to read and interpret musical notation.
- To provide opportunities for pupils to compose, perform, and critically evaluate music from a diverse range of genres, styles, and traditions, including those from different historical periods.
- To enable all pupils to use their voices, learn a range of musical instruments, and collaborate with others to create and share music.
Content and Skills
Pupils at Cam Everlands Primary School will learn to:
- Sing and use their voices expressively and with increasing control and confidence
- Play a variety of musical instruments with increasing skill and fluency
- Compose and improvise their own music, both independently and collaboratively
- Develop a critical understanding of music, including the ability to listen attentively, analyse, and evaluate a wide range of musical styles and traditions
- Understand and use musical notation, including the ability to read and write simple scores
Progression
Our music curriculum is designed to build on pupils' prior knowledge and skills, enabling them to make steady progress throughout their time at our school. In Key Stage 1, pupils will focus on developing their fundamental musical abilities, such as singing, playing simple instruments, and exploring the basic elements of music. As they move into Key Stage 2, pupils will deepen their understanding of musical concepts, learn to play more complex instruments, and engage in more sophisticated compositional and performance activities.
Wider Impact
By providing a rich and engaging music curriculum, we aim to support the overall development of our pupils. Music can enhance their creativity, self-expression, and emotional well-being, while also contributing to the development of important cognitive and social skills. We believe that our music curriculum will not only help our pupils to become accomplished musicians but also prepare them for success in their future endeavours, both within and beyond the classroom.
